![]() ![]() ![]() Taking inspiration from her heroes such as blink-182 and The Offspring, Lavigne leant into confessional lyricism with an authentic edge of teenage angst. The answer that she had was simple: just relax and be yourself. When 17-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter Avril Lavigne released her debut single “Complicated” in 1999, it seemed as though she was speaking for an entire generation of confused teenagers who were tired of keeping up pretences for the sake of other people. In order to find an outlet for the displacement that comes with the search for self, we often throw ourselves into music, and rely on a modicum of truth in a stranger’s words as if they have all of the answers. When you begin to have autonomy over your own decisions and are able to act on impulse and desire as opposed to acting out a path that has already been paved for you, that’s when your own personal identity begins to take shape. ![]() It’s safe to say that navigating the kaleidoscopic landscape of our teenage years is one of the best character-building exercises that a person can go through.
